Tournaments are just one of the variants of Indian Rummy that we offer on our Taj Rummy platform. The structure, winning criteria, prizes and strategies required to win are different for each of the formats of the game.

In tournament-style rummy, the player count often reaches into the hundreds, making it a large-scale event. Conversely, other rummy variants typically accommodate a more modest number of participants, usually ranging from 2 to 6 players.
Rummy Tournaments online are usually structured with multiple tables, and you will progress through various rounds with the aim of securing a top rank. In contrast, other rummy formats commonly feature single tables where you play individual games.
In Rummy Tournaments, your score is influenced by the points accumulated during games against opponents. You will be ranked based on your overall performance through a multi-round elimination process. In other variants, your points are calculated exclusively for the ongoing game, with no influence on future games or rankings.
Rummy tournaments adhere to specific schedules, they commence at designated times and adhere to a predetermined time frame. However, other rummy formats lack a stipulated time frame, allowing games to extend for as long as it takes to complete the match.
Tournaments allocate prizes to top-ranked players, often distributing rewards among multiple participants depending on the tournament's structure. On the other hand, other rummy formats usually involve a winner-takes-all approach, with only one player claiming the entire prize pool.
Participation in rummy tournaments requires pre-registration. You must sign up in advance to secure a spot in the competition. On the contrary, other rummy variants can be played spontaneously at any time, without the need for prior registration, offering greater flexibility for casual gameplay.
On Taj Rummy, there are two main types of tournaments:
The basic rummy rules and gameplay structure are very similar across both these variants. The only major difference is the entry fee and the bet amount.
Cash tournaments in rummy are characterised by several key features. One of the most prominent features of cash tournaments is the necessity to pay an entry fee as a prerequisite for participation. This entry fee guarantees players’ commitment to playing in the tournament. This entry fee can vary from a few tens to thousands of rupees. Another requirement to participate in cash tournaments is the requirement to make a deposit on the platform. The entry fee and mandatory deposit tends to attract more dedicated and skillful players, thus making cash rummy tournaments more competitive than rummy free tournaments.
In these contests, you will also find that there are generally fewer rounds with a reduced number of participants, contributing to a quicker and more intense gaming experience. The option to rebuy is typically available in cash tournaments, and the rebuy fee is usually lower in comparison to free tournaments.
Cash rummy tournaments often run multiple times a day on the Taj Rummy app, ensuring players have ample opportunities to compete and secure their chance at victory.
Free tournaments, as the name suggests, enable players to participate in them without having to pay any entry fee. This allows players to participate in the competition at no financial cost. However, they offer real rummy tournament game cash prizes to the winners. Unlike cash tournaments, there is no deposit required to enter free rummy tournaments, making them accessible to a broader range of players.
In contrast to cash tournaments, free tournaments are designed to allow a larger number of participants. They tend to run for longer periods of time and incorporate a higher number of rounds. This leads to a dynamic and protracted gaming experience. A larger number of players have the opportunity to win prizes in free tournaments.
In the player lobby, open the Tournament tab. You will find all upcoming tournaments listed here. Read through the details of each tournament and pick the one that suits your skill level and schedule. Remember, once a tournament begins you need to play without a break until it ends or you are eliminated.
Click the ‘Register’ button- and you’re done. You may continue playing other games on Taj Rummy. You will be reminded to join the tournament at the scheduled time with a pop-up.
There are certain rules that have to be followed while playing an online rummy tournament:
Once the tournament starts, all players will be allotted a fixed number of tournament chips. You will be assigned a seat at a random table. Your objective is to continuously win as many games and amass as many chips as possible within the time limit of the round. Your screen will display the time left in the round.
Gameplay follows the regular Indian Rummy format. 13 cards are dealt to each player at the table from two standard decks of cards, each containing 2 jokers. Pick a card from one of the centre decks and discard unwanted cards from your hand. Arrange the cards into sequences and sets. To declare on your turn, choose one card that you want to discard and click the ‘Declare’ button.
A valid declaration should contain:
Once someone has successfully declared for the game, they are the winner and are assigned ‘0’ points. All the losing players at the table are assigned points calculated based on the unmelded cards in their hands. Once all scores have been tallied, each player loses the equivalent number of chips to the winner.
Once the time limit for a round is over, all players that do not hold the minimum number of chips required to progress to the next round, are eliminated. You can find this information under ‘Details’ of the listed tournaments. If you do not have the requisite number of chips, you will be given an opportunity to purchase additional chips to remain in the game.
Play continues in higher rounds in a similar manner until the final round is over. At the end of the final round, the winnings are distributed to the top ranked players following the predetermined distribution formula.

Practice, Practice, Practice: Like any other game of skill, the golden rule of rummy is simple - practice makes perfect. Before you begin playing in tournaments, ensure you have honed your skills.
Gradual Stakes: Starting small is important to minimise your losses while learning. Begin with lower-stake tournaments, gain confidence in your gameplay, and progressively move up to more challenging competitions.
Pure Sequences First: You cannot win without a Pure Sequence. Without one, you will lose the maximum number of points. Your first target in any game should be to create a pure sequence.
Discard High-Value Cards: Aces, Kings, Queens, and Jacks carry a hefty point burden. Discard unmatched high-value cards as soon as you can to reduce the risk of accumulating substantial points, which could lead to a larger defeat.
Seek Connecting Cards: Connecting cards are your friends in forming sequences and sets. These cards can quickly be swapped across different melds to optimise your card arrangement. For example, merging 4♥ with 2♥ and 3♥ (2♥ -3♥ -4♥ ) or with 5♥ and 6♥ (4♥ -5♥ -6♥ ).
Collect Jokers: Jokers are your secret weapons. They provide a handy escape from high-value cards. Use them strategically to construct other sets and sequences.
Discard Pile Caution: Steer clear of the discard pile if possible. Picking up cards from this pile can unwittingly reveal your hand's strategy to your rivals. Exercise caution and discretion when considering cards from this source.
Precise Declarations: An invalid declaration will lead to a swift loss. Always double-check your cards before declaring, ensuring they align with the tournament's rules and regulations.
Watchful Gaze: Your opponents are your best teachers. Observe their moves, track their patterns, and adapt your strategy accordingly. This insight can prove invaluable when planning your next move.
Step 1: In “Game Lobby” on the Taj Rummy app or website, you will see a tab called “Tournaments”. Under this tab, active tournaments are arranged into three categories: “All,” “Free” and “Cash.”
Step 2: Choose the tournament you want to participate in. Upcoming Free rummy tournaments are listed under the “Free” section. The tournaments listed under the ‘Cash’ section require you to pay an entry fee.
Do spend some time reading about the tournament under “Details” before making your decision.
Step 3: Select the tournament of your choice and click on the “Register” button. If you have fulfilled all requirements, you will be registered for the tournament. If you want to de-register from the tournament, then you can click on your “Registered” tournament and click on the “Deregister” button for the same.
Please note: Registrations for tournaments close once the player limit has been reached or 10 minutes before the tournament begins, whichever is earlier.
Step 4: Enjoy the game. Once the tournament begins, the ‘Register’ button will change to ‘Join Now’. Click this to begin the tournament.

All tournaments begin at a predetermined time. This is mentioned on the tournaments listing page. Tournaments begin automatically once the scheduled time is reached. A pop-up window will open automatically, reminding you to join the tournament. In case the game window does not pop up on your screen, click on the “Join Now” button in the “Tournament” section to join the game. We recommend that you enable pop-ups on your browser to receive game notifications.
Each player gets a maximum of 30 seconds to make a move on his/her turn. Every extra second that you use will be deducted from the total time allocated to you. If you fail to act during your extra time, you will miss your turn and won’t be able to make your move.
After each round of play, points are assigned to you based on your hand.
If you win by making a valid declaration, you get ‘0’ points. If you lose a game, you will be assigned points as below:
When a tournament begins, all players are given an equal amount of Rummy chips. These chips are worth 1 point each in all formats of the online rummy tournaments. The winner of every round is awarded the total winnings as calculated below.
Total Winnings = Sum of total points of all losing players X 1 tournament chip.
For example: If a player wins a game of six players, and five losing players lose by 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 points respectively, the winner will get 200 chips.
These chips are used in determining the ranking of players.
A rummy tournament starts with the allocation of a fixed number of chips to each participant. In each round, the players need to play a fixed number of games, and they are ranked according to the number of tournament chips they accumulate at the end of each game.
The player with the highest number of chips in hand at the end of a round becomes the winner and/or qualifies for the next round of a tournament. Every round has a minimum number of chips required to progress. You will find this information in the ‘Details’ against each tournament listed.
At any point of the tournament, you will be allowed to purchase additional chips to progress to the next round. However, you need to have a minimum number of chips remaining with you to exercise the ‘Re-buy’ option. Every tournament has its own rejoin/re-buy policies which are listed in the “Details'' section.
